History: The foundations thought to date from around 1140 and the tower and stonework of the main chapel likely to date back to the late 14th century. The chapel stands on the site of an original medieval battle tower, built as part of the tower’s defences. The building was then made into a chapel, formerly called Zoar Chapel. The word ‘Zoar’ means small, and it is a unique little chapel indeed.
The lucky chapel: During the late 18th and 19th centuries, huge parts of the city wall were knocked down as Canterbury grew, but the chapel survived. Then, when German bombing caused further damage during World War II, the chapel still luckily survived and remains intact to this day. Just like a great marriage, no matter what life throws at it, strong foundations and a bit of good luck really helps.
