City Wall Tower hosts weddings and events in its historic Grade II listed English heritage monument building called Zoar Chapel. The word ‘zoar’ means small, and it is a unique little chapel indeed. Licensed to hold up to 80 guests, the chapel is a quirky, intimate and alternative venue, perfect for all types of wedding.
Brimming with history, the chapel is a tower built into the city wall, with the foundations thought to date from around 1140 and the tower and stonework of the main chapel likely to date back to the late 14th century. The chapel stands on the site of an original medieval battle tower, built as part of the tower’s defences.
During the late 18th and 19th centuries, huge parts of the city wall were knocked down as Canterbury grew, but the chapel survived. When German bombing caused further damage during World War II, the chapel luckily survived and remains intact to this day.
City Wall Tower is available for venue hire only, offering a blank canvas and the flexibility to plan your perfect wedding day. In addition to the venue hire, you can upgrade to include a glass of bubbly and canapés following your service while pictures are taken in the outdoor courtyard. Your full reception will then be held off-site.
